The FDA is killing the Medical Device Industry in the US

The US has always been at the forefront of innovative new products and we pride ourselves on staying with the cutting edge of technology. In the Civil War we had doctors amputating legs with saws that were not sterilized. We have come a long way from the civil war, and pride ourselves on being the country that provides the best health care in the world. However times are changing. Due to stifling regulation, and increased taxes on Medical Devices, many entrepreneurs are unable to get the funding they need to develop their products.

To start with the guidelines were integrated one at a time in an attempt to guarantee any new medical devices that would go out to commercial world were safe for the end customers. This essentially keeps with the “first do no harm”. This is really noble, and it does make sense. And to be sure we are free from a lot of medical devices that are laminated with lead paint or the like. The caveat is that as each and every new procedure and specifications was added, it ended up being more and more difficult to get any of these medical devices through the system, also to market.

It follows that if we have now a system into position that makes it so that any innovative medical device must past numerous qualifications, medical tests, animal testing, or review organizations, that we will provide the best and safest products or services available on the free market. Unhappily this is obviously just a wrong conception. A good number of our most innovative cutting edge medical devices are not even doing a showing in the United States since the exclusions, and the timeframe it takes to pass the reviews and legal guidelines mean it is an unreasonable and unprofitable risk. Probably the most rapid growth of markets in India is new medical devices.

Investors and Venture Capitalists are the engine that drives originality. In this area of advanced technology, Silicon Valley is a stunning example of what one can deliver on when awarded the best suited funding. With venture capitalists backing the brightest young minds in our continent the breakthroughs that got their start in Silicon Valley are well known. Those entrepreneurs changed the face of our planet over the course of 2 whole decades.

Innovations such as this are attainable in the medical field by creating essentially the most ground breaking medical devices in our historical past. The change is that different than Silicon Valley, Investors and Venture Capitalists have begun to look at investing in medical devices as an unfavorable financial investment. The timeframe it requires to see profit is far too long. And the likelihood that the project may get stamped out by a principle or regulation is starting to become increasingly more unreasonable as the years remain on.

A decline in brand new medical devices has been a year to year occurrence. Both the last two years has seen a 13% decline in medical devices. The new medical devices taxations have put an acute damper on the market too. The taxes is not on profits, it is strictly calculated on revenue. This unjust practice is putting suffering businesses and organizations out of business.

Our innovators are forced to sell their devices to other markets. One developer created an iPhone app that can detect heart beats and diagnose arrhythmias from a smart phone device. Due to regulatory committees, the producer is now selling the App to veterinarians. The regulations are much leaner in the field of veterinary care. In this case our animals have a better chance at quality, innovative care than we do.

While it is frightening that we are forcing our best and brightest to take care of our animals, the worse news is that most new innovative medical devices are going directly to India. We are robbing Peter to pay Paul, and drowning in a sea of red tape.

Bulimia Causes & Tips on Recovering from it

Beauty is sometimes associated with thin figures and suave physical appearance. This is more prominent in Western culture that embraces the idea of thinness as physically attractive. Blame it on the television and movies that features beautiful women with stick-thin figures. America’s Next Top Models and Jersey Shore sports thin and anorexic-looking women which become a beauty and fashion icon to teenage girls. Some women are naturally endowed with small bone structures which make them thin and fragile looking. It is just a usual coincidence that they look stunning in fashionable wardrobes that suits their body frame. Because of this, women who admire their fashion statement attribute this to their eating lifestyle.

Bulimia is often developed as a result of this body image misconception. It is an eating disorder that stemmed from psychological factors and social pressures.  Bulimic patients tend to have a distorted perception that slim is stunning, fat is unattractive, and obese is uglier. Unlike anorexic patients that are characterized by lack of appetite, bulimics would eat whatever they want and then later on they would purge it through vomiting. Vomiting is often triggered by excessive physical exertion, taking diuretics, or even gagging their throats with the edge of the spoon. They fear that the food nutrients be absorbed in their system and that they would gain an inch or two. There are even reported cases that girls as young as ten years old seek to lose weight at the mercy of slimming pills. Social attitude, though, is not the sole reason why many girls are so conscious with their body image. Sometimes it is also caused by other psychological disorders like depression.

Why you should breastfeed and NOT bottle feed

Breastfeeding has become a major issue with most women at the child bearing age. With the increase in breast cancer in women at this age bracket, most women suffering from breast cancer are in a dilemma on whether to breast feed their babies or not. It is the desire of every woman to remain her attractive body shape even after having their third child. Research shows that most or all women experience an increase in the size of their breast during and after pregnancy. This is to prepare your body to produce milk for your little princess or prince. Most women are breast feeding their babies to avoid further sagging of their breasts. Whatever your worry is, I am here to assist you.

breastfeeding advantages over bottles

Some few years ago I was in the position you are in, torn in between breastfeeding my baby or not. I wanted to retain my beautiful breast caps and wanted my little princess to grow to be a healthy child. Breastfeeding is very vital to you and your child. There is nothing better than a mother’s milk. It contains all the nutrients that your child needs to grow healthy and build strong immunity against diseases. Research shows that children who are breast fed are healthier than those who are formula-fed. Other than breastfeeding, the size of your breast can be affected by your genetics, age and the posture you use to breast feed your baby. The way of holding a baby during breastfeeding can negatively or positively affect the size of your breast. Holding your baby in the right way and exercises will help you regain your original breast size. Do not deprive your child a healthy life, breast feed your child.

Remember, one way to keep your breasts firm is by exercising. By strengthening the underlying muscle it helps them look firmer. And when all else fails an operation for tightening sagging skin can be your last resort. A breast lift tightens skin around the chest area and removes sagging tissue while working to lift and define breasts. A breast lift with implants restores fullness via silicone implants. But surgery has it's own lists of pros and cons so decide carefully. What are some other advantages of breastfeeding? Click here to see more.

Babies may need chiropractic adjustments too

As a new mother you always blame breast feeding problems on yourself. It could just be your baby needs an alignment. "With the birth process becoming more and more an intervening procedure ... the chiropractic adjustment becomes even more important to the child's future," said the late Larry Webster, D.C., of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association.

"I started finding the breastfeeding problems due to misalignment of the neck and head bones causing babies the inability to breast feed properly," a Louisiana Chiropractor said.

After the first week of using a painless activator, the mom said she could see the difference.

"His head was a lot straighter on his own," she said. "He actually was sleeping better. He was only sleeping one to two hours, and he started sleeping two to three hour stretches."

Of a random group of 1,250 babies examined 5 days after birth, 211 suffered from vomiting, hyperactivity and sleeplessness spinal abnormalities were found in 95% of this group. Spinal adjustment "frequently resulted in immediate quieting, cessation of crying, muscular relaxation and sleepiness.

No matter what disease or condition you have, you can benefit from a healthy spine. Spinal health can be as important for your overall healing as proper nutrition. Only a chiropractic spinal checkup can tell.

Among the many things contributing to your health: the quality of the air, food and water you take in; how you handle emotional stress; your inherited weaknesses and strengths; your use of drugs; exercise; and relaxation-a healthy spine is absolutely essential. In some people it is a major factor and can make the difference between a life of health, strength and vitality or a life of disease, weakness and disability.

Red Wine Researcher Accused Of Fraud

A researcher at the University of Connecticut may have committed scientific fraud with his studies of red wine. His work stating that the wine is healthy was published in 26 articles, in over 11 scientific journals. Dipak K. Das was the researcher at the university that supposedly found that red wine is healthy for humans. Dr. Das was granted money from the United States Government for his research, but he did not use all of the funds for his small-scale experiments. The University of Connecticut is returning two grants to the U.S. Government worth a combined total of $890,000. Dr. Das did not answer any of his emails or phone calls to the university when the fraud case was opened.

I believe that he should be charged and sued according to the amount of money he stole from the government. No scientists that work at universities should be allowed to handle the $890,000 on their own… They should have the university’s financial officers deal with the money in a closed account. Dr. Das was given the money directly instead of going through the university, which is why he was able to get his hands on it. I personally don’t want to be paying taxes to the government so they can pay people who steal the money. This is very serious (and a serious amount of money), so I am hoping this man receives either jail time or hefty fines.

Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Receiving Criticism About Their Obesity Ads

The Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta is hearing strong criticism for their in-your-face advertisements concerning child obesity. The ads feature headlines such as “It’s hard to be a little girl if you're not.” The company will start to display ads on billboards with overweight children and uncomfortable messages. Later in the year, they will also start to release television advertisements. One of the TV ads shows a boy asking his overweight mother, “Mommy, why am I fat?” She simply sighs heavily while the commercial fades out.

The reason Children’s Healthcare decided to release these ads was a survey that they conducted in Atlanta, Georgia. They surveyed families with overweight children and 75 percent of parents did not see their children’s weight a problem. According to the data from the survey, over one-million children are considered obese in Georgia alone.

The campaign is called Strong4Life and is planned to cost $50 million over five years. The Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Georgia Foundation recently donated $95,000 to help the cause, but Children’s Healthcare is expected to pay for at least $25,000,000 leaving the remainder for donations.

There are more advertisements upcoming and will feature different children from around Georgia. It’s sad that the country has to start a campaign to stop childhood obesity, but if that is what it takes, I am a supporter. Childhood obesity starts at home with what parents feed their kids, the amount of exercise children get, and if they have caring parents. Also, schools are removing physical education and recess time due to the costs. It is sad that the United States has to come to this, but I’m hoping organizations such as Strong4Life can turn this around.

Doctors Use Too Much Technology [Opinion]

While visiting the local urgent clinic earlier today, I noticed that the nurses and doctors rely far too much on the technology in their office - mainly the computer. When the nurse was asking me symptoms of my ailment, he tapped away on the keyboard of the computer. He would say, "Did you have a runny nose?" and then click the button on the computer that corresponded to my answer. In the end, the computer pretty much told him what medication I needed without him even having to think. This defeats the purpose of a nurse in the first place. If all I needed to do was fill out an online form, I could have done that myself.

Medical doctors used to be looked up to as helpers of the community and very knowledgeable. In this modern 21st century, doctors will only see you if your insurance covers their office and you have an appointment. When you show up, they punch a few buttons on the computer and then print out a prescription. Doctors should only use the computers for keeping track of records, not diagnosing symptoms.
