Study Finds That Oreos Are as Addictive as Cocaine

A new study from Connecticut College has provided proof that Oreos and similar snacks can be as addictive as cocaine. The study found that when rats were placed in a maze with Oreos on one side and rice cakes on the other, the rats would continuously choose the side with the Oreos. In addition, the study found that the rats enjoyed the inner icing portion more than the outer cookie portion, and often ate that part first.

Another piece of information that the researchers were interested in studying was the effect Oreos and other high-sugar, high-fat snacks were having on low-income areas. The researchers found that Oreos were marketed and purchased more frequently in areas with lower socioeconomic status. Because Oreos have high sugar and fat contents, this leads to low-income areas having a higher obesity rate among both children and adults, and is often linked to the negative health risks in eating in the fashion such as the onset of juvenile diabetes. And if Oreos truly are addictive, this could be a never-ending cycle for families that regularly purchase them.

The researchers believe that Oreos and other high-sugar, high-fat snacks could potentially be more dangerous than morphine or cocaine because they are more readily available and cost much less. They found that the same areas in the brain's "pleasure center" were activated when the rats ate Oreos and when they were injected with addictive drugs.

This can lead to a serious problem among the general public. Anybody who has eaten an Oreo will know that it is especially hard to eat only one. Some people may believe that this is just because the cookies taste good, but what if there is something else at play? What if fatty and sugary foods are even more addictive than we previously thought? If that is true, it truly does provide Nabisco (the company that makes Oreos) with a solid business model: advertise Oreos heavily on children's TV networks in areas with lower socioeconomic status, then sell Oreos to the consumer at a low enough price to make them seem like a convenient, economical snack, and watch as the same consumers come back again and again to buy more cookies.

Consumers should be cautious and try to avoid eating fatty, sugary, and generally unhealthy foods. Instead of eating "convenient" junk food, consumers should consider trying a vegetarian diet, which can be just as convenient, but a lot healthier, than Oreos.

23AndMe Awarded Designer Baby Patent

On September 24, genetic testing company 23AndMe was awarded United States patent number 8,543,339 for “gamete donor selection based on genetic calculations.” The idea behind the patent is that 23AndMe can test each parent for physical traits or probability for particular diseases, and then choose which genes to give the baby. This means that if one parent’s family is prone to type II diabetes, but the other parent is not, 23AndMe can choose for the baby to have the gene from the parent who is not prone to diabetes. The same process can apply to physical characteristics as well – parents can choose their baby’s eye or hair color based on the genes from both parents.

In addition to simply choosing from the genes of the two parents, 23AndMe is hoping to have a high-quality donor gene pool so parents can create the ideal “designer baby.” If both parents are prone to diabetes, 23AndMe can simply select genes from their donor pool to ensure the baby will not be prone to diabetes. In addition, parents can also select for their child to have blonde hair – even if both parents are brunette.

Although it sounds like a great idea to be able to “engineer” the ideal baby, many genetics experts are wary. Being able to choose the exact genes a baby will have removes the randomness that is childbirth. In addition, many religious experts are questioning whether this is ethical and if the parents are “questioning God” by giving their babies genes to avoid disease. Even still, this is a great way to cure genetic diseases, create variety, and ensure a healthy baby. Nowadays, most people have brown eyes and dark hair because those genes are naturally dominant. Green eyes and blonde hair have become rare, so allowing parents to give their baby a certain color eyes is groundbreaking.

This technology still has a long way to go, but the framework and patent are both there. It will be interesting to see in the coming years how “designer babies” show up in the news.

Veganism can cure Type II Diabetes

It has long been known by doctors that one of the contributing factors for Type II Diabetes is diet. We all know soda is bad for us, everyone knows carrots are good for your eyes and spinach makes you strong. So why arent we all seeing 20/20 and look like the chiseled individuals that adorn the magazines we all like to look at? Because Meat tastes like murder, and murder tastes good. And sugar mmmm sugar so delicious, Cotton candy are you kidding me!?!? Heaven.

So what is all this nonsense about being a vegan? I know that for me personally when i used to hear someone say they were a vegetarian, or a vegan I would roll my eyes, and try not to get too close them because they most certainly smelled like patchouli. Of course since I'm always right I was right, about the patchouli.

But as I certainly grow older and arguably wiser, I've come to question the merits of a Vegan diet on a whole other level. The level that, well it makes sense.

Let's look at a few things about the Vegan diet that tend to make it work as a cure for some people with type II Diabetes.

1. Regulate Blood Sugar - Eating this mainly plant based diet will do one thing for you. Regulate. Regulate your blood sugar levels since there are not huge spikes with sugar, and simple carbohydrates that essentially turn straight to sugar. Because the diet is pretty high in soluble fiber, it will also help you regulate in other well, more moving ways as well.

2. Heart Healthy - The make up of the Vegan diet is naturally cholesterol free, low in saturated fats, and high in soluble fiber which makes this one of the most heart healthy diets known to man. This is good news since Type II Diabetes has a high instance of heart disease related to it.

3. Weight loss - It is easy to see why weight loss occurs when you see how many calories are in oil and fats, and how much room they take up in your stomach, you then compare how many calories are in leafy green vegetables, fruits and nuts and you can see how you just cant stuff that much into one hole. Due to this difference, you eat until you are full, but you are full of better food with far fewer calories. Weight loss is inevitable.

Many vegans eat the way they do for moral reasons and want to go to parades, throw red paint on people with fur coats, etc, etc, and oh yes wear lots of patchouli. Forget that noise, relax and have some broccoli bro.

If I thought it would be delicious, I would eat a baby seal, and if I knew the baby seal tasted BEST after being clubbed, that is how I would order it, "Ill have the clubbed baby seal, stuffed with veal, and fois gras" MMMM I'm getting hungry. BUT my choice is for health reasons.

My choice is for the energy that I get, and in convincing some of the more unhealthy people in my life to go vegan I hope to add years to their lives, reduce their medications and overall play a part in them having a better life.

Although it seems like it would be fun to throw paint on someone.

High Intensity Interval Training: Why it works so well

High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is a form of exercise in which on a given interval exercise is performed at or near maximum effort, following this effort a lower intensity period or rest occurs. This sequence is then performed several times until the routine is complete. A good example of HIIT is the way that sprinters train. One sprint drill is performed on a track, the athlete sprints the straightaways at maximum effort, and then walks the curves. This routine is done normally for a mile. A marathon runner may think anything less than 10 miles is a joke, and hardly worth lacing his shoes up for. I will say though if you have access to your local track, try this for one mile or four laps. It is quite difficult.

So lets take a look at our two athletes. The Marathon Runner versus the Sprinter.

Marathon Runner: During exercise the body will use a portion of stored fat deposits for fuel. However during prolonged intense exercise such as marathons, the body will start to eat away muscle mass as a source of fuel. This also slows down the bodies metabolism by depleting HGH.

Sprinter: During these HIIT exercises the body plows through fat stores, and since the intensity is high and the duration is short, it tears muscles down, and during recovery following exercise, muscle is built back on top. In short this is the reason Marathon runners look like they do and Sprinters look like they do.
So all of this sounds great but is it really that simple? Just do high intensity exercises at short intervals, and you will get amazing results. The short answer is yes. Notice I did not say it is really that easy, rather that it is that simple. HIIT is difficult but there are numerous reasons that make is so beneficial.
  • Efficient - With a relative low time commitment of 4-30 minutes per session in as little as 3 times a week, amazing results can be found. Improved muscle tone and improvements in balance should also be expected.
  • Burn more fat while resting - Building lean muscle shreds through fat even when the body is at rest.
  • Speeding up Metabolism - HIIT can boost HGH up to 450%. The good news here is that HGH is essential in chewing up that body fat.
  • Heart Health - regular participation in HIIT will increase your aerobic capacity, and lower your resting heart rate
  • Shift in BMI - A difference in traditional diet and exercise programs and a HIIT program is that the scale may not be the best measuring tool for success. Many participants lose very little weight but the shift in Body mass from fat to muscle is remarkable. While weight might not deviate much the shift from fluffy to chiseled will not go unnoticed.

Alternative Medicine and Homeopathy

For many years modern medicine looked down on Alternative medicine. There are some good and bad reasons why this was the case. Most doctors have not studied alternative medicine and therefore do not understand it. Therefore it is easy to look down on these practitioners as quacks. However due to a mounting pile of evidence showing that the results many alternative medicine providers have achieved has many doctors working in accord with alternative medicine.

There are some good reasons that the medical community mostly does not condone the use of alternative medicine. Some AM practitioners claim an ability to heal any disease, and some insist on the first visit to cease all medications prescribed by a doctor. Just as there are doctors that are quacks and are horrible at their craft, there are certainly many AM practitioners that are not doing their contemporary professionals any favors by practicing the way they do.

I would like to discuss one branch of AM known as homeopathy. Homeopathy has been around for over 200 years. Some form of homeopathy is practiced in modern medicine in several different instances. For instance what is the treatment for a child suffering from ADHD? to give this child with hyper activity disorder Ritalin, a stimulant. It doesn't seem to make much sense but that is the treatment. As well one treatment for many patients suffering from severe allergies is to administer low doses of pollen into their system. Then over time increase the dosage until a tolerance is built up in the system and the patient is either allergy free or the symptoms are greatly lessened. These treatments are founded on homeopathic principles.

So what is homeopathy anyway? The key principle is treating a "like with a like" So let's take an example of homeopathy in action. If a patient complains of symptoms of sleeplessness and agitation, a homeopathic practitioner may administer a low dose of caffeinated coffee as a treatment. Why is this? Because in high doses coffee can cause these symptoms. So a homeopath seeks the symptoms and then ties them to something in nature that may in high doses cause these symptoms and then administers the low dosage treatment.

What is the science behind homeopathy? While modern science is unsure what makes the treatments so effective numerous laboratory tests have shown the efficacy of homeopathy. In one such study a homeopathy practitioner created a remedy out of thyroxine, (a hormone produced by the thyroid that is responsible for regulating normal growth) and then administered these to tadpoles. The result was a dramatic slowing in the metamorphosis process in which the tadpoles become adult frogs.
Homeopathy Succession

The typical preparation of these remedies involves a process of vigorously shaking the original ingredient with water and alcohol and by using dilution and succession the remedies are created. It is believed that during the succession process nanostructures are created and these are the active ingredients in homeopathy.

Whether or not science can explain it homeopathy has sound roots in medicinal practices, while not all treatments may be successful the data indicates that there is a great deal of merit in homeopathy as it is practiced today.

Which is a better healer, medicine or the human body?

heal yourself from cancer

It truly is amazing what the human body can do. Many times all that is necessary is to give the body what it needs to heal itself, and it will take care of the rest on its own. Surprisingly though modern medicine doesn’t hold the human body’s healing ability in such high regard. The reason for this is twofold. First of all as a society we want the solution right now and in a pill form. Secondly there is no money in healthy people. There is also no money in dead people. So the real money is somewhere in the middle. Doctors want to keep us alive, but sick enough to keep coming back for more medicine. The following examples help to illustrate this point.

A good doctor should treat the patient not the disease. This means taking a look at the underlying causes rather than the symptoms. The human body works in concert to perform every task. This includes healing itself. Take some wisdom from the song, “The ankle bone is connected to the leg bone” because treating one part of the body, or treating a symptom does not work. Treating the body is the key to health. Take for instance some medicines that claim an ability to help reduce belly fat. This just isn’t possible you can reduce fat, which over time will reduce belly fat naturally. By reducing cortisol and allowing the body to unnaturally deal with the issue of fat in the body does not attack the underlying cause of all that extra cortisol which is stress. By tricking the body you rob Peter to pay Paul. This will ALWAYS catch up to you in the end. Peter must be paid as well. It is sufficient to say that the ankle bone is indeed attached to the leg bone.

Let’s take a look at the placebo effect. There is a study that was done on terminally ill cancer patients with late stage lymphatic cancer. One of the patients had orange size tumors throughout his body in his lymph nodes. The doctor fully believed in the new experimental drug, as did the patient. Three days after administering the drug the tumors had all shrunken to half their size. Within weeks the tumors were all but gone, and the patient was in remission. The miracle drug was saline. The human body healed itself.

I am not advocating abandon all medicine and just hope you will get better by drinking some V8. That is absurd. I will say however that if you are on medication, an especially if you are heavily medicated, have a consultation with your doctor and ask him why you are taking every medicine you are one, if there are any known complications with mixing the meds you are on, and if it would be possible to get off of any of the medicines or reduce the dosage. Give your body a chance to heal yourself, if not new symptoms may occur and your overall health level can continue to go down.
Recently a Grandmother from Seattle checked into the hospital because she was having a severe asthma attack. The MD gave her steroids to stop the asthma; this treatment caused high blood pressure, which caused vertigo. In an effort to treat the vertigo, blood pressure medication was issued, which caused dizziness, which caused the lady to stay in bed for fear of falling, which caused swelling of the legs. The treatment for this was to issue a water pill, which caused her potassium levels to plummet, so a potassium supplement was issued. The good doctors also found that she was suffering from Osteoporosis, so treatment was administered for this, which ultimately caused gastric bleeding. Later the Grandmother commented. “I was sicker when I got out than when I went in”

I am not saying that doctors or medications in and of themselves are bad. I am simply commenting that the system itself is broken. With many doctors keenly treating symptoms with medication, all the while creating more symptoms, the patient is forgotten about as the good doctor chases down the disease. There is no one on the planet more qualified or motivated to take charge of your own health. Responsibly question you health care providers, and find out if you are overmedicated. Give your body a chance to heal itself. And put down that donut, and try some broccoli!

The FDA is killing the Medical Device Industry in the US

The US has always been at the forefront of innovative new products and we pride ourselves on staying with the cutting edge of technology. In the Civil War we had doctors amputating legs with saws that were not sterilized. We have come a long way from the civil war, and pride ourselves on being the country that provides the best health care in the world. However times are changing. Due to stifling regulation, and increased taxes on Medical Devices, many entrepreneurs are unable to get the funding they need to develop their products.

To start with the guidelines were integrated one at a time in an attempt to guarantee any new medical devices that would go out to commercial world were safe for the end customers. This essentially keeps with the “first do no harm”. This is really noble, and it does make sense. And to be sure we are free from a lot of medical devices that are laminated with lead paint or the like. The caveat is that as each and every new procedure and specifications was added, it ended up being more and more difficult to get any of these medical devices through the system, also to market.

It follows that if we have now a system into position that makes it so that any innovative medical device must past numerous qualifications, medical tests, animal testing, or review organizations, that we will provide the best and safest products or services available on the free market. Unhappily this is obviously just a wrong conception. A good number of our most innovative cutting edge medical devices are not even doing a showing in the United States since the exclusions, and the timeframe it takes to pass the reviews and legal guidelines mean it is an unreasonable and unprofitable risk. Probably the most rapid growth of markets in India is new medical devices.

Investors and Venture Capitalists are the engine that drives originality. In this area of advanced technology, Silicon Valley is a stunning example of what one can deliver on when awarded the best suited funding. With venture capitalists backing the brightest young minds in our continent the breakthroughs that got their start in Silicon Valley are well known. Those entrepreneurs changed the face of our planet over the course of 2 whole decades.

Innovations such as this are attainable in the medical field by creating essentially the most ground breaking medical devices in our historical past. The change is that different than Silicon Valley, Investors and Venture Capitalists have begun to look at investing in medical devices as an unfavorable financial investment. The timeframe it requires to see profit is far too long. And the likelihood that the project may get stamped out by a principle or regulation is starting to become increasingly more unreasonable as the years remain on.

A decline in brand new medical devices has been a year to year occurrence. Both the last two years has seen a 13% decline in medical devices. The new medical devices taxations have put an acute damper on the market too. The taxes is not on profits, it is strictly calculated on revenue. This unjust practice is putting suffering businesses and organizations out of business.

Our innovators are forced to sell their devices to other markets. One developer created an iPhone app that can detect heart beats and diagnose arrhythmias from a smart phone device. Due to regulatory committees, the producer is now selling the App to veterinarians. The regulations are much leaner in the field of veterinary care. In this case our animals have a better chance at quality, innovative care than we do.

While it is frightening that we are forcing our best and brightest to take care of our animals, the worse news is that most new innovative medical devices are going directly to India. We are robbing Peter to pay Paul, and drowning in a sea of red tape.
